Kent & Curwen – A History Reborn And Reimagined

Kent & Curwen is a jewel of British menswear reborn for the 21st century. Creative director Daniel Kearns has established a new blueprint for Kent & Curwen: a fresh take on English heritage for the way men dress today.

British sporting and regimental traditions have been reimagined to present renewed pride in the authentic roots of Kent & Curwen, in the charm and strength of character of British gentlemen across the decades. The intuitive ease of how modern British men dress is emblematic of the new attitude at Kent & Curwen.

The History Of An English Classic

The brand was founded in 1926, two years after Eric Kent and Dorothy Curwen first crossed paths on Savile Row, in the heart of Mayfair, where the Brand still has it’s headquarters today. It was the start of a story full of idiosyncrasy and character. Kent & Curwen first made its name with neck attire, supplying ties to venerable universities in Oxford and Cambridge. By 1930, the company was producing neckwear for the finest clubs in London; the country’s best schools, and all of the British regiments throughout the Empire.

In 1932, Kent & Curwen purchased a knitwear factory in London to create the first ever cricket sweaters, a style that would solidify their reputation around the world. Since then, the Kent & Curwen cricket sweater crossed over from sport to become a global standard.

Eric Kent had an individuality of style that still inspires today. When designing ties, he would throw flowers on the atelier floor to find unexpected colour combinations. Kent flaunted conventional dress codes, fond of red socks and for mixing sportswear with his suits. His friendships and influence went transatlantic, with Kent & Curwen dressing the Hollywood Cricket Club in the thirties, its members including Errol Flynn, Laurence Olivier and C Aubrey Smith.

Though Kent passed away in 1939, his presence in the brand still lives on, and not just for his flair in dressing: the insignia of the Three Lions is taken from the heraldry of his family crest. While later adopted as emblem of English sporting teams, the logo offers an unbreakable link with the company’s proud British heritage.

The Future Of The British Male Wardrobe

To continue the legacy of Kent & Curwen in the 21st century, Kearns has taken inspiration from the authenticity of its storied past and created a contemporary wardrobe fit for the modern man. Reworking the classic hallmarks of British sporting pastimes for the everyday, modernising them and mixing them with crafted menswear staples to form the foundation of the Kent & Curwen look.

Kearns created this new vision for Kent & Curwen with a unified approach that began with deep research in the archives, finding the traditional pieces and heritage details that will resonate with men today.  The ambition is to create a modern lifestyle brand based on the authenticity of its legacy, something that is identifiable with its history, and instinctively wearable for men all around the world.
